The Cigna Group Environmental Policy Statement

As a company whose mission is to improve the health and vitality of those we serve, we adopt a precautionary approach to environmental sustainability efforts. Meaning, preventive action—versus remediation—should be taken in the face of potential, serious, or irreversible harm to the environment or human health.

We aim to serve as a connector and catalyst for change to protect global access to healthy air, water, soil, and food. Because we are keenly focused on the connection between planetary health and human health, we consider managing environmental risks and opportunities to be important to our business. For example, climate change may present global public health challenges, such as those relating to extreme weather events, decreases in water supply, heat exposure, and declining crop yields. We also acknowledge that the effects of climate change disproportionately impact communities that face social and economic discrimination, contributing to further health inequity.1

Additionally, we believe that environmental stewardship also makes sound business sense as we are able to identify new efficiencies and make strategic investments that reduce our operating costs. We are committed to continuous improvement in alignment with ISO 14001 management principles to reduce our environmental footprint across the value chain.

Scope

This Environmental Policy Statement applies to all the global operations of The Cigna Group®, inclusive of its owned and leased corporate offices as well as its pharmacy packaging and delivery facilities, and the employees and contractors who work in these facilities.

Environmental Stewardship

Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions: We aim to reduce GHG emissions in support of the 1.5 degrees Celsius pathway recommended by the scientific community and the United Nations Global Compact, by focusing on minimizing emissions associated with our real estate portfolio and within our value chain. Specifically, we have near-term Scope 1, 2, and 3 GHG emissions reduction targets that are in the process of being validated by the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi). We also aim to achieve carbon neutrality for Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 2040.

Energy: We use energy responsibly and will continue to reduce energy consumption through enterprise-wide actions, including behavioral changes. We also aim to source renewable electricity for 100% of our global power needs by 2030.

Water: We believe that access to clean, safe, potable water is a human right. We demonstrate water stewardship by striving to reduce water withdrawal volumes and using water conservation strategies where possible.

Waste: We use the “reduce, reuse, and recycle” model to minimize our waste footprint and prioritize our largest waste streams, including paper and e-waste. We are deepening employee engagement to divert company waste from landfills. Additionally, we responsibly handle, store, and dispose of all hazardous waste whenever applicable to our operations.

Supply Chain: We expect our suppliers to comply with all applicable environmental laws and regulations, as well as the expectations outlined in our Supplier Code of Ethics [PDF]. We continue to enhance our responsible procurement practices by requiring critical suppliers to complete a sustainability questionnaire and taking steps to integrate the consideration of our suppliers’ environmental sustainability into our purchasing decisions.

Distribution and Logistics: We focus on reducing emissions from the distribution and logistics associated with our operations.

Innovation and Best Practices: We continuously explore innovative solutions that reduce our reliance on natural resources and increase the efficiency of our buildings and activities, such as maintaining a real estate portfolio that includes LEED® and ENERGY STAR® certified buildings.

Stakeholder Engagement

The Cigna Group Employees: We raise awareness about environmental stewardship among employees and empower employees to take action through information in our annual Corporate Impact Report and learning management system, internal communications, and employee-led Green Teams at our most populous sites.

For employees who have been negatively impacted by extreme weather events, we offer an employee assistance program (EAP) to connect employees and their family members with mental health care and related resources. We also established The Cigna Group Employee Relief Fund—a way to help employees seeking emergency financial assistance following a natural disaster or certain other events.

Health Plan Customers, Employer Clients, and First Responders: We empower customers to reduce their environmental impact by providing them with the option to receive paperless statements, submit claims online, use direct deposit, and view plan information through myCigna® and the myCigna app. We also continue to navigate patients to optimal sites of care, including virtual and digital alternatives.

Understanding that climate change and environmental risk pose unique challenges to health and public health systems, we continue to enhance an online Disaster Resource Center for first responders, health plan customers, and employer clients. We support customers during extreme weather events through our Customer Disaster Response Program and offer access to trained clinicians through our EAP and on-site Critical Incident support.

Community Partners and Non-Governmental Organizations: Through The Cigna Group Foundation, we focus on reducing barriers to health equity through a dedicated impact fund. We also provide support to communities impacted by extreme weather events through partnerships with credible, leading disaster relief organizations.

Responsible Governance

Performance Monitoring and Targets: We will continue to review our environmental performance annually and perform against targets for continuous improvement.

Transparency: We publicly communicate our environmental targets and progress to stakeholders annually through Corporate Impact Report and other external communications.

Business Continuity and Environmental Risk: We ensure that services to customers are not interrupted by extreme weather events by following the procedures set forth by the Business Continuity Program of The Cigna Group. These procedures include regular scenario analysis focused on potential risks, like extreme weather, to our business operations. We also intend to perform climate scenario analyses approximately every three years to identify specific climate-related risks and opportunities for our company overall.

Integration of Environmental Considerations into Business Processes: As our understanding of the ways that our business shapes and is shaped by the environment and climate change evolves, we aim to continuously integrate environmental considerations into our business processes and encourage our suppliers to do the same.

Regulatory Obligations: We maintain programs and processes designed to promote compliance with identified environmental regulatory requirements.

Executive and Board Management: We communicate our environmental performance to the leadership of The Cigna Group, including reporting to the Corporate Governance Committee of our Board of Directors, CEO, Chief Human Resources Officer, and the Corporate Impact and Sustainability Advisory Committee. Board-level oversight of the Environmental Policy of The Cigna Group is provided by the Corporate Governance Committee. The Chief Sustainability Officer and Global Workplace Managing Director at The Cigna Group are responsible for regularly reviewing and updating the Environmental Policy of The Cigna Group.
