Building Equity and Equality Program

Our five-year initiative to expand and accelerate efforts to support diversity, inclusion, equality, and equity for communities of color.

Our Mission

Launched in 2020, the Building Equity and Equality Program of The Cigna GroupSM is a five-year commitment to continue addressing racism, bias, and socioeconomic status and health disparities for people of color in alignment with the mission of The Cigna Group – to improve the health and vitality of those we serve.

We know people of color experience striking differences in health outcomes compared with their white counterparts, and we know inequity in the workforce presents significant barriers to health for communities of color.

Since the launch of the Building Equity and Equality Program, we’ve taken action to address these health inequities, and others, by partnering with nonprofit organizations and community leaders to fund grant programs through The Cigna Group Foundation.

We’re proud of our work to date: providing opportunities, through our support of initiatives related to education and health care access, economic stability, and other social determinants of health (SDOH), to help people of color to rise above negative situations and thrive in both their personal and professional lives.

Diversity Scorecard

Our annual DEI scorecard reflects our goal-oriented approach and the targeted actions we’re taking to make meaningful impact in three key areas – culture and co-workers, clients and customers, and communities.

Program Components

Health

Through The Cigna Group Foundation, we offer grants that help eliminate barriers to health and make it easier to get care. This includes addressing needs amplified by COVID-19 through our Healthier Kids For Our Future® program. We also fund grant programs that directly impact communities of color – addressing community and social issues, jobs creation, and education.

We work with Congress and the administration to address and eliminate racial, ethnic, and economic disparities in health care. We also share insights and solutions that address SDOH and strengthen the well-being of all communities.

Well-being

Racism and bias impact health and overall well-being. We believe no one should confront racism and bias alone.

Our 70,000+ employees sign a commitment of inclusive behavior and collectively donate more than 100,000 volunteerism hours. These hours support social justice, health equity, diversity and inclusion, and community outreach.

To support an inclusive company culture, we require unconscious bias training for all employees and offer inclusive leadership training and resources. We also offer frequent discussions about systemic racism in America. We believe every employee is responsible for fostering an inclusive company culture where they can bring their whole self to work – and inspire others to do the same.

Peace of mind

We recognize that good financial health provides peace of mind, and we also recognize that systemic racism has created a disproportionately negative economic impact on people of color.

That’s why we are partnering with Howard University and the School Superintendents Association to help current and future generations. Together, our goal is to create educational opportunities and improve school district leadership in urban areas. We do this by funding fellowships for those on a career path to becoming an urban public school superintendent.

Additionally, to help improve the pipeline of Black professionals in health care careers, The Cigna Group partnered with Wake Forest School of Medicine to establish an endowed scholarship supporting diversity and inclusion among students as they embark on careers in medicine.

And, as part of our Diverse Supplier goals, we have the Cigna Supplier Mentor Protégé Program, which pairs minority suppliers with executives of The Cigna Group to strengthen and grow their businesses.

Governance

Our Enterprise Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Council oversees all parts of the Building Equity and Equality Program and reports progress to the Chairman and CEO. We also publish an annual DEI Scorecard Report [PDF] to advance the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
