Human Rights Policy Statement

The Cigna Group® supports fundamental human rights for all. While national governments bear the primary responsibility for upholding human rights, we strive to respect and protect human rights through our practices and policies and by complying with the laws of the countries in which we do business.

Our commitment to human rights is guided by the laws of the United States governing human rights as well as the following international documents:

The Cigna Group is also a participant of the UN Global Compact and supports the ten principles set out in this framework.

Communities and Customers

We strive to be a responsible corporate citizen and create a positive impact for our customers and within the communities where we operate through advocacy around access to healthcare and health equity, quality and customer rights, and the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI).

Access to Healthcare and Health Equity

As a company whose mission is to improve the health and vitality of those we serve, we understand that 80% of a person’s health is driven by environmental factors, socioeconomic status, education, and neighborhood attributes, known as social determinants of health. We believe that a person’s gender, race, education, income, or zip code should never dictate the quality of their health. Closing these gaps in health equity starts from within, and we have a responsibility to our clients, customers, and communities to expand and create solutions and benefits that address health inequities where we know they exist. We are committed to empowering our colleagues to embed the principles of health equity in our culture, systems, policies, and practices.

We also recognize that community is essential to well-being and vitality—but healthy communities don’t just happen. They are created and cared for each day by those who live there. We are dedicated to improving health equity in our local communities by being a catalyst for change.  Through philanthropic initiatives like The Cigna Group Health Equity Impact Fund, we partner closely with local nonprofits that know firsthand what their communities need and where the most effective change can be made. Together, we’re working to ensure that each person has every opportunity to live well.

Finally, we acknowledge the connection between environmental health and human health. We believe that responsible environmental stewardship can improve health and vitality—and also makes sound business sense.

Quality and Customer Rights

We are committed to providing our customers with the right care at the right time in the right place. We invest substantial resources in a broad scope of quality programs, and our commitment to quality has been recognized by national external accreditation organizations.

Responsible AI (Artificial Intelligence)

We recognize the responsible use of AI is essential to upholding human rights, including the right to privacy, equitable treatment, and access to care. At The Cigna Group, we use AI to support health care transformation by helping to enable the next generation of accessible, effective, affordable and enhanced health care solutions. AI models streamline administrative processes, enable earlier interventions for complex conditions, and personalize care to improve outcomes and reduce costs. We view AI as augmented intelligence—supporting human expertise rather than replacing it. We never use AI to deny care.

Our Enterprise Model Governance team and governance structure oversees the development, deployment and monitoring of AI models—driven by our seven Responsible AI Principles:

  1. Validity and Reliability. We build and use AI systems that are accurate, and we employ human intervention to detect and correct errors.
  2. Safety. Our AI systems behave as intended and are resilient to attacks by bad actors.
  3. Privacy. We incorporate privacy and data protection principles in our use of AI technologies.
  4. Fairness. We mitigate potential bias or disparate treatment in our AI systems.
  5. Transparency. We can explain how an AI system provided an output (explainability) and why the system provided that output (interpretability).
  6. Accountability. Our AI systems are subject to human direction and control.
  7. Ethical Usage. We deploy AI in a way that upholds our values, promotes equity, and serves the broader good.

Models are monitored for equitable use of AI due to intrinsically occurring socioeconomic biases in health services data. Our governance program identifies disparate treatment in model outcomes and mitigates algorithmic bias wherever possible. We continuously review and improve our AI models to mitigate unintended biases and meaningfully contribute to our mission of improving health and vitality. Further, our internal AI Center of Enablement collaborates across technology, privacy, legal, and compliance teams to ensure responsible deployment of generative AI solutions.

Overall, our responsible AI practices align with industry standards, including the NIST AI Risk Management Framework and the White House AI Bill of Rights. See more in our annual Corporate Impact Report.

Employees

Employees at The Cigna Group play a vital role in fostering a culture of integrity, respect, and inclusion. The following highlights our principles and commitments that guide employee conduct and workplace practices.

Code of Ethics

At The Cigna Group, we expect our employees to act lawfully toward colleagues, vendors, suppliers, customers, and business partners as outlined in our Code of Ethics and Principles of Conduct. Consequently, The Cigna Group requires employees to take annual training on the company’s Code of Ethics and Principles of Conduct Policy.

Labor Practices

At The Cigna Group, we are committed to providing working conditions that enable our employees to thrive. Employment is expected to be in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations, including those governing working conditions, compensation, benefits, opportunity, and hours.

We respect each employee’s right to make an informed decision, free of coercion, intimidation, or harassment, about membership in associations and labor unions. Employees have the right to organize and bargain collectively. The Cigna Group is committed to bargaining in good faith with all recognized labor organizations.

Discrimination and Harassment

We do not discriminate in hiring, promotions, salary, or any other terms or conditions of employment based on race, color, sex (including pregnancy), age, disability, veteran status, religion, national origin, ancestry, sexual orientation, gender identity, marital status, domestic partner status, genetic information, or citizenship status. Additionally, we do not tolerate any form of harassment, whether verbal or physical, in the workplace. We address these issue areas comprehensively through our Harassment Avoidance [PDF] and Equal Employment Opportunity [PDF] policies. As part of our mandatory compliance training program, all employees must complete our U.S. or Global Workplace Harassment training upon hire. Most employees undertake a biennial refresher course (others complete it annually). The training covers harassment prevention, legal trends that impact the workforce, and our company policy and expectations.

It’s critical that we rely on the power of our team, strengthened by a diversity of backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. It’s at the heart of who we are as a company to treat each other with respect, to provide colleagues with meaningful opportunities to grow and to contribute, and to challenge ourselves to always get better at increasing inclusion for all our coworkers. Doing so ultimately helps us better serve the broad range of needs of our customers, clients, and communities, and deliver on our mission.

Workplace Health and Safety

The Cigna Group maintains a comprehensive health and safety program and Occupational Health and Safety Policy [PDF] that governs all aspects of our business and provides guidance on our interactions with each other, our clients, and our vendors. We continually focus on the health and safety of our employees and their physical workplace conditions and provide a robust safety training program. We are committed to meeting and exceeding industry standards as well as actively adapting to industry changes and advancements.

Child Labor, Forced Labor, and Human Trafficking

We support, follow, and abide by labor laws and regulations in the regions where we conduct business, including those that address child labor, forced labor, and human trafficking. With respect to child labor, The Cigna Group follows the ILO labor standards outlined in Convention Nos. 138 and 182. We do not condone or accept any aspect of forced or compulsory labor and strictly prohibit employees from engaging in human-trafficking related activities. More details on our policy can be found here [PDF].

Vendors, Suppliers, and Business Partners

We expect our business partners – including suppliers and vendors – to share our commitment to respect human rights. The standard supplier contract of The Cigna Group includes our Supplier Code of Ethics [PDF]. This Code addresses integrity in human rights and labor and describes our expectations in the areas of community, child labor, human trafficking, forced labor, wages and working hours, health and safety, freedom of association, non-discrimination, and harassment prevention. We also promote working with a broad variety of suppliers through our Inclusive Supply Chain Program and have an Ethical Procurement Policy to guide the procurement actions of our own employees.

Due Diligence, Mitigation and Remediation

As part of our regular sustainability materiality assessment, we identify and assess human rights-related potential impacts and risks within our own operations and value chain.

We are committed to providing effective resolutions to mitigate and remedy potential violations of human rights. The Code of Ethics and Principles of Conduct of The Cigna Group requires all workforce members to report any event, incident, situation, or conduct that violates, or may potentially violate, an applicable law or regulation, our Code of Ethics and Principles of Conduct, or any other Company policy or procedure. Our Ethics Help Line offers a secure reporting mechanism and is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We support individuals who, in good faith, provide information relating to reports of potential misconduct and our Whistleblower Policy [PDF] prohibits threats or acts of retaliation in any circumstance.

We assess all human rights-related reports we receive through our Ethics Help Line or directly to the Ethics Office via our Duty to Report and Open Door Policies. As part of our ongoing monitoring processes, we routinely identify issues and trends and execute the appropriate mitigation or remedial actions. We also conduct employee focus groups to assist in addressing potential issues or grievances.

Governance and Oversight

We believe that every employee is responsible for respecting human rights. The implementation of our Human Rights Policy Statement is overseen by the Corporate Impact and Sustainability Advisory Committee (Advisory Committee). The Advisory Committee comprises more than a dozen senior leaders from across the company, including leaders from each of our growth platforms, to support our ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship, a sustainable and equitable health care system, our employees, corporate social responsibility, and corporate governance. Updates are periodically provided to the Corporate Governance Committee of the Board of Directors of The Cigna Group, which exercises oversight of policies and practices with respect to corporate responsibility and environmental sustainability matters, including this Human Rights Policy Statement.

We strive to routinely review and refine our approach to addressing human rights. Updates to this version of the Policy Statement were made with input from key internal stakeholders across various enterprise functions. The Vice President of Corporate Impact is responsible for annually reviewing and updating the Human Rights Policy Statement of The Cigna Group. We publicly report on our efforts to respect and protect human rights through our annual Corporate Impact Report.
